One weird trick to stop climate change

Ending fossil fuel dependence is the single most impactful thing we can do
One weird trick to stop climate change

Learning about clean energy can radicalize a person.

You realize pretty quickly that everything we need to stop climate change—not just to lessen the impacts, but to fully reverse course—already exists. The technology is mature.

  • Fossil fuels are directly responsible for 80% of all greenhouse gas emissions. We can replace them with cheap, efficient, resilient, renewable energy. Solar, wind, and batteries, plus emerging technologies like enhanced geothermal engineering and pumped hydro.
  • Upon completing the clean energy transition, the cost of electricity will continually fall until it reaches near-zero cost. That will mean effectively free power for everyone on earth.
  • So much of what's expensive in our world comes down to the cost of its energy input. So when energy becomes effectively free, the world gets very cheap. Transportation, heating and cooling, growing food, desalinating water, sucking carbon dioxide out of the air—all of these will cost us almost nothing.
  • In a world where electricity is free and everything is electrified, humans won't fight wars over resources. We can use our lives to pursue scientific advances, to make art, and to serve as the stewards of this incredible planet.

Sounds good, right? All that's missing is the political will to make it happen. Too many of our politicians—Republicans and Democrats—are owned by fossil fuel companies and the investor-owned utilities who'd rather watch the world burn to ashes than reduce their profit margin by even a single percent.

That's why I'm fighting for the world I want to inhabit:

  • Public ownership of our energy system
  • Nationalizing fossil fuel companies
  • Investment in climate adaptation

I can't do it alone. We need a mass movement of knowledgeable, dedicated eco-socialists hellbent on making it happen. That's what the NYC-DSA Ecosocialists are building here in New York City. If you're in New York, I hope you'll join us. If you're not, join your local chapter of DSA and start your own Ecosocialist Working Group.

Here on Green Juice, we're making tricky topics easy for anyone to understand. Because the more you learn, the stronger you'll believe in this beautiful, clean, renewable world, and more convincing you'll become in your own activism.

We've written over 50 articles about clean energy tech, utilities, climate, more.

Here are some good places to start:

1. How to solve the energy crisis

Electrify Everything
The single most impactful thing we can do to slow down climate change is to stop burning fossil fuels.

2. Clean energy metrics are confusing. This primer makes it make sense.

Mega-wut? Making sense of energy metrics
When I first started learning about clean energy, I struggled to contextualize the many numbers, units of measurement, and abbreviations that get thrown around. This is my attempt to make it easier for you than it was for me.

3. The insane way utilities make a profit—and why it's killing us

The surprising, infuriating way electric utilities make money
It sounds ridiculous, but most electric utility companies don’t make money selling you electricity. In fact, many of them don’t even produce their own electricity. So what do they do? And how do they end up making millions of dollars in profits every year?

4. Our top-down energy system no longer makes sense, and it's causing a full-blown crisis

The energy grid: the most complex machine ever made
To power all the data centers coming online, experts believe we need to build 150–200 GW of new electricity generation. Under our longstanding top-down energy system, that will not be possible. But there is an alternative solution.

5. What is eco-socialism, and how is it different from other climate movements?

6 reasons to become an eco-socialist in 2026
IN in 2026: Eco-socialism. Public power. Zohran’s New York. Listicles. Subscribing to newsletters about clean energy.

If you've read all those and are hungry for more, I recommend clicking on whatever looks most interesting. Here are some more topics we've written about:

Geothermal energy: the heat beneath our feet
There’s enough naturally occurring heat deep within the Earth to power our planet many times over. This is the story of how it got there and how we’re gonna get to it.
Is balcony solar coming to NYC?!
A new bill would make balcony solar legal in New York state. This is the story of what that means, how we got here, and what might happen next.
Crikey! 40% of Aussies have rooftop solar
Soon, Australians will get 3 free hours of electricity every day
Batteries will save the world
Batteries are the fastest growing clean energy technology today, cheaper and more energy-dense than anyone ever thought possible. But why are they so important? And what will our battery-powered clean energy future look like?
The Presto Chango Hot ‘n’ Cold Machine
What if I told you there was a way to heat and cool your home with a single appliance that’s up to 550% more efficient than your gas boiler or furnace... and it could save you up to $500 a year on your utility bill?
Induction stoves with built-in batteries: how to boil water in 40 seconds
Boil a liter of water for pasta or tea in less than a minute. Preheat your oven 4x faster. Bake, fry, and broil at precise, consistent temperatures. This is the power of induction ovens with built-in batteries.
